Interior Design

Phase 3 - Production is resumed

Today we are back on track with the production and it was a productive day at the workshop

2 good news have brighten up our day; the prints are finally ready to be picked up at the architecture block! Our fabric (with 3d illusion) print was also ready; it only needs ironing before we display it!

Our first job was to number and cut out squares again to replace the faulty ones we made earlier. Since this is the 2nd time we are doing this, the production ran smoothly. We were unsure about the use of uhu as we didn’t want to mess the photos up again; in the end, we all agreed on the use of spray mount.

In the afternoon, we split into 2 groups to drill holes onto our squres. Katie, Marta and I have finished drilling all the squares in the afternoon; whilst Rachel and Sammie were trying out connect the squares with wire. We agreed on the use of copper as it is the most malleable metal available at the workshop.

Our sample on fabric is finally here.. this is our 2nd piece of work which will be placed in 2022

From the results of our experiments, the 3d illusion effect gets really messy when it is paste onto an actual 3d sample. However, we would like to involve the 3d anaglyph effect in our exhibition since it provides a cool visual experience.

We wanted to print it onto a material that we don’t often play with (as an interior student) and our fashion students suggested cotton. None of our concerns seemed to occur on our sample; the colour stays as bright as they’re on the computer and the 3d illusion works fine with the blue and red glasses too!

2nd strike

We planned to reprint our images today to replace the faulty ones we had yesterday; unfortunately the printer for large prints has died today due to a high demand of printing (today is apparently the architecture student’s portfolio deadline)

The production is delayed again and that means we’ll have to get a lot done tomorrow.

Tomorrow’s plan is to collect our prints, cut and mount them onto the faulty squares

Phase 2 - drill + unexpected issues

Today we have gathered all of our ‘finished’ squares, a total of 450 squares (25 rows with 18 each)

Manchester-20120515-00535

We have had a bit of an accident .. some of photos are ruined due to (possibly) the misuse of glue

As a result, we’ll have to reprint our pictures onto A0 and remount them onto the faulty ‘squares’

Manchester-20120515-00532
Manchester-20120515-00533

Our plan today was to drill holes on each corner of the squares then the squares will be connected by wires. The thinest wire avaliable is 0.4mm and we need to fit 2 wires into each hole to maintain the shape of the mosaic, therefore the hole needs to be no smaller than 1mm. The technicians suggests stainless steel as it is malleable and it has the strength to hold up to a high weight.

The production is delayed due to faulty images, we have to reschedule a time to print out pictures and possibly a group session to glue pictures onto the squares.

Phase 1 - the mass production of squares

As we aim to create a mosic out of lots of mini squares..our first task is to cut out squares in approximately 58x58 mm

Unfortunately, the fashion girls are not allowed to work in workshops as they’re have not been inducted to the machines. Therefore they are assigned to the duty of cutting out images of our mosaic instead and labelled them carefully

We all got home with a stack of squares and photos.

and this is only 1/5 of all the squares we own..reassembling them would be like completing a puzzle with no clues

Project updates ..

We all agree on having 2 seperate pieces of work in Fred Aldous and 2022

Sexyandiknowit

Our main piece would be a patchwork made out of mini squares of poly props, together they create this mosaic with the hidden message to get people thinking. The mosaic will be twice as big as an A0 (life size!). Hopefully, it will be displayed on the Fred Aldous window (facing Lever Street).

Our second piece will be displayed in 2022. Rachel and Sammie of Fashion have made a sample on cotton and it worked really well. As you can see the piece is made in blue and red to provoke an unique visual experience - 3D (which is trending!). We’d be providing 3D glasses to visitors

so we are back to our original idea - patchwork but this time we’d be using images of mosaic with hidden messages we created earlier

instead of having a flat mosaic, I’m thinking of creating a mosaic with strips suspended at different angle. However, it is uncleared in the drawing

Trial..

We all agreed on making our installation 3D, both illusionary (requires blue and red glasses) and practically 3-dimentional. From our tutorial on tuesday, our tutor suggested to use poly prop as the material for our installation. Unfortunately, the material was impossible to be glued.

Here’s a mini sample i made with cardboard, just like my proposed idea

He also suggested that we can perhaps create an illusion of images/messages which require people to move about to adjust the angle that they’re standing in to be able to read it.

further development on 3d images..

I have applied the similar technique onto the mosaics and made a few images

from everyone’s opinion, this might have been over photoshoped and the original idea of showing clear images of hipsters is lost

but instead these could be used as the shadow of the live-size human shape

from the tutoiral on thursday..our tutor suggested that maybe we should start thinking of an effective way to display our work

Daniel Deste’s Cloud shelves (designed by Thorunn Arnadottir) has inspired me

perhaps we could split up our images in small sections and attach them each of these sehleving units of different depth

it invovles a combination of 3d and 2d iamges and together they create a bigger image of an illustration i created earlier

a red and a blue light could be put behind the sections involving the 3d images

here is a little tester i created on photoshop..it works great with the blue+red goggles

we’ll get a better outcome if we apply them onto shelving units of different height, making it more 3-dimentional

Getting pictures of ‘hipsters’ of the the NQ

Our initial idea was to take pictures of people of the Northern Quarter and to create a mosaic from them. Today, Katie and I were in town to get some pictures done for our work.

We found it a bit awkward as we had to go up to strangers and ask for their permission to have their photos taken. Our first location was the Afflecks Palace as this is quite a reputable place of where the ‘uniquly dressed’ people would shop. This is the first guy we found and he seemed to be quite flattered to have the photo taken; the only problem was that he sounded foreign (possibly Canadian), which we then think to ourselves if he was the right target as we aimed to get photos of (preferably) locals in the Northern Quarter

Dsc02419

We realised that it will be more efficient and possibly a greater variety of people to get photos of passers by; therefore we sat outside a cafe and got our job done for the day. Here are some of the photos we got..
